I finally gave up my social media. It took a painful break up to do it, but I finally let it go. When I was inspired to do my project, I wrote that I would give up social media in order to show the world that we can connect without having to use social media, but immediately after I wrote those words I wondered how I would be able to do this. I told myself that my blog is exactly what I am considering to give up. It was actually a very hard task. I gave myself the excuse that I needed social media to promote my blog. I do not have much social media to begin with anyway. I gave up Instagram several months ago. I had Twitter, WordPress, and a new form of social media called Snapchat. To me it seemed like I needed something to look at. I needed to watch someone’s life in some shape or form. I gave myself time and I let my mind get into this feeling of watching someone else’s life. I wanted to see where it would lead me. What I soon realized instead was the way social media is enabling true connections. Almost everyone on social media has created a farce about their lives or is on social media to show off their life style. It is almost disgusting to watch when you think about it. No one is REALLY connecting. A better description of social media would be a show about yourself that you can make up. You never have to show the world your faults, only your perfections. You can make up events with just a caption. You can look interesting with a photo of anything made up. You can hide behind whatever you want to make up about yourself. Although some may agree that social media is a huge stepping stone and an innovation for our society, I think in some way it is becoming a way to disconnect with reality. I feel like I have more to say to someone I have not seen in a while if they or I have not perused through social media first. So! It has been a whole week now. No social media! At all! I found myself having more meaningful conversations, and I am less worried about mundane things, like what someone had for breakfast. Photos and stories will be posted very soon. Stay tuned. …..
